What is a Psychoeducational Assessment?

A psychoeducational assessment is an evaluation done by a licensed psychologist or credentialed psychologist which includes looking at a child’s academic achievement (reading, writing and math skills), cognitive and psychological processing (different areas of the brain that can impact learning) and social-emotional, behavioral abilities (how a child acts or responds in the home and school environment). The evaluation is conducted through set of assessment procedures, which often includes a review of educationally-relevant records, interviews, observations and standardized assessments. Essentially, a psychoeducational assessment puts all the puzzle pieces together to determine why a child is struggling to learn or identify their giftedness, and includes a diagnosis or diagnoses, if a child meets criteria. Lastly, but often most important, a psychoeducational evaluation includes specific recommendations to address a child’s areas of need and how to capitalize on a child’s strengths. Identifying individualized recommendations can increase a child’s success at home and school.
